Early this winter, a car pulled out in front of an 18-year-old driver on a snow-covered road in Johnstown.


The young driver had recently taken a defensive driving course and was able to avoid a crash.


"She came home and said, 'Oh God, Mom. This guy pulled right out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and did that little maneuver we were taught, and it worked,'" said Jami Zipf, trauma program coordinator at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, and the mother of the young driver.


Zipf's daughter had learned the maneuver in a New Driver Car Control Clinic sponsored by the hospital. The clinic will be offered for the first time in northwestern Pennsylvania this year: at Harbor Creek High School in May and at Meadville Area Senior High School and Girard High School this fall.


Registrations are being accepted for all three local clinics. The cost is $129, compared with $179 in most areas. UPMC Hamot and State Farm Insurance will pay the $50 difference for each driver- parent team. Parents must participate in the course, which includes four hours of behind-the-wheel practice, along with their teens.
