I recently lost my job with a small company, with fewer than 20 employees. The company is based in Michigan, and my insurance was through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. I live and work in California. Do I qualify for Cal-COBRA? If not, what other options do I have to continue my insurance?

– Peter, Walnut Creek

Unfortunately, you do not qualify for either federal COBRA or Cal-COBRA. Federal COBRA only applies to those who worked for companies with more than 20 employees, and Cal-COBRA is not available to you because your employer is not based in California.

Other options are available to you depending on your personal situation. You may be able to enroll in a HIPAA or conversion plan, secure coverage through the Pre-Existing Condition Plan or the Major Risk Medical Insurance Program, or enroll in Medi-Cal. You can also purchase individual coverage.
