RBS Insurance in £454m profit boost
Direct Line to Churchill owner RBS Insurance returned to profit in 2011 - a key milestone for the business before it is spun off from the wider bank.
The sale of the division is on track, RBS boss Stephen Hester said, and the preferred option remains a stock market flotation, which he hopes will take place in the second half of this year. According to reports, the arm could be valued at up to £5 billion.
RBS Insurance, which will be renamed Direct Line Group from March 1, said milder weather helped it record operating profits of £454 million in 2011, compared to a £295 million loss in 2010.
Returning to profit was the first phase in the insurance arm's transformation plan, the division said, before it moves to bolster its competitive position in the market.
RBS is required to sell the business, which also includes Green Flag, Privilege and broker business NIG, by the end of 2014 in return for its £45 billion taxpayer bail-out.
Paul Geddes, boss of RBS Insurance, said: "We have turned around our financial performance and successfully completed the first phase of our transformation plan; to return to profit."
