Bombast a-blazing, Chris Christie has created a style all his own
18.05.12
Jay Keating leans against a chain-link fence across the street from the old Roebling firehouse, with a tight grip on a leash and a firm grasp of all that’s happening around him. For two weeks now, Keating — with Otto, his English bulldog, in tow — has chuckled at the frantic activity in his five-block world in this speck of a village in Burlington County.
Here, where downtown is a convenience store and an unnecessary traffic circle, carpenters spruced up the rehabbed engine company, which is now a community center. Residents tidied lots, street sweepers scrubbed the curbs and volunteers slapped on touch-up paint. Security experts cased the blue-collar neighborhood of porched homes and declared it safe.
Done stretching and yawning, the sleepy part of Florence Township — less than 1,000 people — is about as awake as it’s ever going to be: Gov. Chris Christie is holding a town hall meeting on a Thursday afternoon.
“The governor coming here today?” Keating says. “That’s a big deal. Nothing ever happens here.”
