Lawmakers pass PIP reform
18.05.12
Despite a last-minute push for senators to reject a compromise, the Florida Legislature reached a deal late Friday on no-fault car insurance reform and handed Gov. Rick Scott a major victory to close out the 2012 session.
The House approved HB 119 largely along party lines, 80-34, but the Senate passed the measure at 9:20 p.m. on a razor-thin 22-17 vote.
Afterward, Scott appeared in the Senate chamber and congratulated Senate President Mike Haridopolos.
“This is a triumphant moment for the residents of Florida,” Scott said in a statement. “Members of the Legislature heard our call to put Floridians ahead of special interests and combat the fraud that has become a billion dollar tax on drivers.”
It was a hard-fought win. Scott spent Thursday and Friday leaning heavily on senators to embrace provisions in the much different House version of PIP (personal injury protection) reform. During debate, several senators argued that too many concessions were made.
