Sizing Up the DIY Car-Repair Challenge

18.05.12

If you’re one of the growing number of American motorists driving a car that’s no longer covered by a factory warranty, you’ve probably wondered how much repair and maintenance work you can do on your own to avoid expensive trips to a mechanic.

The advice from the experts: Don’t be afraid of your car, but don’t underestimate how challenging it can be to do a job right.

Here are a few tips from some experts in the field of car maintenance and do-it-yourself repair.

Start small:

If you are new to car repair, or haven’t worked on a car in a long time, it’s best to start small. It’s not hard on most vehicles to change windshield wipers or air filters, check and refill the radiator, brake fluid or transmission fluids.  Doing you own oil change is a next step up the difficulty scale. Be sure you have the right filters, and are careful to put the drain plug in properly or you could damage the engine.
