Council approves new salary for Daytona Beach tourism chief

18.05.12 It took more than two hours, but the Volusia County Council agreed this afternoon to a salary for the Halifax Area Ad Authority's choice to lead the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The council voted 6-1 to authorize the HAAA board to offer Jeffrey Hentz a three-year contract with a base salary of $135,000 per year. Councilwoman Joie Alexander cast the lone dissenting vote.

The council also approved, in concept, $20,000 in bonuses Hentz could receive if he meets certain goals, which haven't been determined. Alexander and Councilwoman Pat Northey opposed that in a 5-2 vote.

"We are standing on the precipice of taking the community to another level, or two or three levels," HAAA board chairman Ted Doran told the council in a strong endorsement of Hentz. "This is our first opportunity to really move into position someone who has this level of contact outside of our community, who can generate conventions into our Ocean Center and can generate leisure market tourism."
