Group Will Work to Register Young Voters

Known as the Young Achievers Coalition, the group will recruit students, encourage them to register if they aren't already, and then have those registered voters work to register and educate other young voters on casting their ballots.

"I first got involved in campaigning and voting while a student at Davidson College (in Davidson, N.C.). That was 37 years ago," Hardaway said.

The Polk County Supervisor of Elections Office does a great job registering 18-year-olds, Hardaway said, but statistics from the office show 18-year-olds have a better turnout than those at age 25, indicating that the older young voters get, the less involved they are.

He has sent out mailers to more than 5,800 young people and plans to visit Florida Southern College and other colleges in the county to recruit politically active students to help in the group.

"There are 18,000 people between 18 and 25 registered to vote in Polk County. That is a fair amount who can make a difference. My goal is to get them organized and active," he said.
