Startup Spotlight: Crimson Informatics device monitors driving
Steven McKay and MacGregor Fraser started Crimson Informatics Inc. in 2010 to provide data analytics gathered from an electronic car monitor.
Crimson's data-capture monitor plugs into the diagnostic computer inside a car and transmits information that shows driving habits and routes and makes recommendations for improvement.
"We gather GPS and other data and turn it into a score," McKay said.
Its monitoring device measures the whole movement of the car with a fairly high level of precision.
"Our proprietary device has more data than anyone else's," McKay said. "These devices are good for parents of teens if they want to show how their teen is driving."
The Henrico County-based company's primary customer is insurance companies, which are moving toward monitoring driving habits through issuing usage-based insurance.
"It's important for us to push the industry as this sort of insurance becomes more popular," McKay said.
"Progressive Insurance has been one of the leaders in usage-based insurance followed closely by Allstate and others," McKay said. "Insurance companies in Europe also offer usage-based insurance programs. We see this as the wave of the future for insurance companies. It's a more direct and fair way to assess your risk than indirect methods, such as age and where you live."
