Area job growth increases slightly

18.05.12

January was a record month for both Virginia and Maryland , because both states netted a reduction in their unemployment numbers.  In addition to the two states that borders the District of Columbia , 45 other states also saw a reduction in unemployment numbers.

Washington, D.C. wasn't left out of the equation; the nation's capital saw it's unemployment numbers dip to under ten percent for the first time in slightly over two years.

According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), D.C.'s unemployment rate was at 9.9 percent at the first of the year, and in 2011 jobs in the city grew by 7.3 percent, with construction payrolls growing by 9.1 percent.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray remarked,  "We're trending in the right direction."

Last week Gray unveiled a $2 million effort to jump-start hiring in the District.

Although Gray hailed the drop in the unemployment rate, the District's economic picture remains troubled. The city's unemployment rate is still nearly 20 percent higher than the national average, and January brought a month-over-month decline in jobs of 6,100. That number -- nearly 1 percent of the District's jobs -- was a higher percentage drop than any state's.
