I have a friend who says the McLaren F1 is not legal in the US. I couldn't find any resource that said that it was illegal. Does my friend's "fact" hold water?

It's street legal as long as you obey the driving laws (and it can pass emissions in some states).

An emphatic question mark remains over team form after temperamental weather blurred the opening day of the Australian Grand Prix.

Little hint was given of Formula One's pacesetting teams for 2012 - although McLaren provided a strong early glimpse.

Jenson Button led a McLaren one-two in the first 90-minute hit-out but a rain-marred second session scattered predictions with the order unlikely to resemble anything like Sunday's grid.

The Red Bulls struggled to keep pace with the front-runners in the only dry run, with Mark Webber fifth and reigning titleholder Sebastian Vettel a shock 11th.

But Australian rookie Daniel Ricciardo made a stunning debut before his home race, forcing his Toro Rosso into a highly creditable seventh place.

Ricciardo's French teammate, Jean-Eric Vergne, was more than two seconds slower than the West Australian, finishing 19th on the timesheets.

Button stamped his name on the session with a fastest lap of 1min 27.560sec, just two tenths of a second ahead of teammate Hamilton.
