State Senate to Vote On Cell Phone Ban For Teen Drivers
21.05.12
"Driving and talking on the cellphone is equivalent to intoxicated driving," Suzy Carter, with the National Safety Council said.
The ban known as "Kelsey's Law" would make it illegal for those with a level 1 or 2 graduated drivers license to talk and drive.
It's named for a Michigan teen who died in a crash while talking on her cell phone.
"Teen driving it's hard," Carter said. "You have a driver who is inexperienced and there's so many distractions as it is, that when you add cellphones it just compounds it immensely."
The National Safety Council is backing the ban. With teen drivers more at risk of crashing than others, the council believes a ban will save lives.
"Driving a vehicle is a very dangerous thing, it's a large, heavy vehicle and the consquences are very severe," driving improvement instructor and former Meridian Township Fire Chief Dave Harper said.
So what do teens think? Some agree cell phones are dangerous on the roadways, but feel singled out.
