used car sales FAQ

Have an idea what the car is worth first so you know if the selling price is in the ballpark. Don't fall in love with that particular car; there are thousands and thousands of used cars out there. Get a carfax report if you can and be prepared to walk

You will not get a title in your name until the sales tax is paid. The dealer probably collected the sales tax already.

Many states will give you a 60 - 90 day temporary tag while the title paperwork is being processed. As soon as you go in with the title and request permanent plates you will have to pay the taxes.

So basically, when yout temp tags expire

in my state (RI) car sales tax is the same as the regular sales tax. and the only way to be tax exempt is if you have a tax credit letter from insurance company which you sometimes get if your car is totaled

Region's new-vehicle sales up 23%

21.05.12

Warm weather and a plentiful supply of vehicles led to a surge in new-car sales for central Ohio dealers last month.

Sales rose 23 percent in February from a year earlier in eight counties of the Columbus metro area, according to Autoviewonline.com.

In many years, February is one of the worst sales months. This year, though, dealers benefited from an unusually good combination of robust inventories and unseasonably warm days.

“This was as good of a February as you’ll see,” said Rhett Ricart, co-owner of Ricart Automotive on the South Side.

He said some of the success can be attributed to the industry’s recovery from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Several automakers had parts shortages and could not produce enough vehicles to meet demand. Most of those problems have been fixed.

Ricart also has noticed changes on the financing side of the business: Automakers are offering low promotional interest rates, and banks are willing to make loans to customers with less-than-exceptional credit scores.
