Car sales set a blazing pace in Houston

21.05.12

Coveted cars, easier credit and Houston economy's have been a boon for local auto dealers.

In January and February new car sales were "blowing the doors off" local dealerships, according to Steve McDowell , owner of InfoNation, publisher of TexAuto Facts, which tracks vehicle sales for the 10-county area.

Sales in January marked a 42-month high, he said. While February's performance was not quite as strong, retail sales last month were still up 42 percent over the same time last year. Nationally, total new vehicle sales in February were up 15.7 percent year-over-year.

In the first two months of the year, all manufacturers saw double-digit percentage increases in retail sales in the Houston region for new vehicles, compared to the same time last year, McDowell noted.

"We expected a good year, but coming out of the box it's been better than expected," said Wyatt Wainwright , president of the Houston Automobile Dealers Association . "We're optimistic and really excited," he said. "We've been worried that rising gas prices might slow things down, but so far - cross your fingers - it hasn't happened."
